Abstract: Quantum computers are becoming a reality, with quantum processors reaching a few hundred “noisy” qubits (Quantum analog of bits) in size. These “near-term” devices provide an exciting opportunity for exploring how quantum computers might solve some computational problems that are out of reach for existing technology. In this talk I will give a brief overview of quantum computing, and why and where do we anticipate quantum computers to lead to “quantum advantage” over classical computers. I will focus on the recent advances in the IBM Quantum platform, and what is on the roadmap for the next few years. I will conclude by describing a few research projects with potential applications relevant to the oil and gas industry.

Biography: Dr. Saif Rayyan is a research manager in the quantum computational science team, part of IBM Quantum. His team engages in highly interdisciplinary research to apply quantum computational methods to solving problems in a wide range of applications areas. Prior to joining IBM, Saif held several positions at MIT working on several initiatives related to digital learning, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), physics education research and global education. Saif holds a PhD in physics from Virginia Tech, and an MBA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
