Abstract: Fossil fuels are the foundation of the modern, global energy economy. However, the generation of carbon dioxide and resulting climate change are likely consequences of the production of energy from these fuels. This presentation explores some aspects of the energy transition in which the world is engaged, including:
· Contradictions in forecasts of the decarbonization of the global energy system.
· The next half century: natural gas versus coal.
· How the European Union rules the world.
· A historical note, which lacks the consolation of false hopes.
